Tom Goodwin has 28 years of experience in health care strategic marketing communications and public affairs. Goodwin's diverse communications experiences, including serving as a congressional press secretary, journalist, advocate and communications consultant, provide him with a unique and multifaceted perspective on public affairs.
Goodwin's expertise includes communications planning, especially for business risk planning, message development, speech and presentation writing, and media training.
Clients have included the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (Division of Provider Education and Training), the Department of Health and Human Services (Assistant Secretary for Budget, Technology and Finance), Applied Medical Resource, The Medical Device Manufacturers Association, Eli Lilly and Company, The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, The American Dental Association, Qualidigm (the Connecticut Quality Improvement Organization), The Farm Credit Council, The National Business Travel Association and the Defense Advanced Research Programs Agency.
For seven years, Goodwin managed public relations and issues management relating to Medicare and Medicaid issues for the Federation of American Hospitals. He devoted eight years of his career to trade journalism in the FDA regulatory arena as a reporter, editor and accredited White House correspondent with F-D-C Reports, Inc. – “The Pink Sheet.” Later, he was a lobbyist with the National Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, a trade association representing makers of generic drugs. In 1974, Goodwin was press secretary to former U.S. Rep. Paul Cronin (R-MA).
Goodwin is a veteran of three public relations agencies and, in addition to being a senior vice president and associate with TheWadeGroup, Inc., is the founder and principal of Step One Communications. As senior vice president at Porter Novelli, Goodwin founded its public affairs and strategic messaging practices. He also served as executive vice president of The Hawthorn Group, a Washington-based public affairs firm. Previously he was a vice president in the Health Care Division at Powell Tate.
Goodwin is a graduate of The American University. He and his wife, Cheryl Matheis, AARP director of state affairs, reside in Vienna, Va., with their children, John and Claire.
